Alicia Quigley

alicia quigleyAlicia Quigley is a lifelong lover of romance novels, who fell in love with Jane Austen in grade school, and Georgette Heyer in junior high. She made up games with playing cards using the face cards for Heyer characters, and sewed regency gowns (walking dresses, riding habits and bonnets that even Lydia Bennett wouldn’t have touched) for her Barbie. In spite of her terrible science and engineering addiction, she remains a devotee of the romance, and enjoys turning her hand to their production as well as their consumption.

A Most Unusual Situation: A Traditional Version Georgian Romance (Historical Romance)

a most unusualIt’s 18th century London, where an Earl loses a vast sum of money to his good friend, a Duke. To settle the debt, the Earl suggests that he marry his fourteen year old daughter to the Duke’s twenty-one year old son. The marriage takes place the next morning. She is terrified, and he is furious. Calling her an ugly dowd, he leaves immediately after the ceremony on the Grand Tour and does not return for four years. When he returns, two adults who have barely met, and don’t even recognize each other must build a marriage. Can these two strong and determined personalities learn to overcome the resentments of the past, and convert the misunderstandings of the present into a passionate love affair on which they can build a life?

If you love a sweet romance with no sex, this version is definitely for you! If you like sex with your romance, please buy “A Duchess Enraged”, the “After Dark” (sexy) version of the same story.

The novel is based on actual history, that of the Earl of March and Lady Sarah Cadogan. The historical details can be found in my blog at AHeyerLove.com. The Earl of Cadogan did marry his daughter, Lady Sarah Cadogan, to the Duke of Richmond’s son, the Earl of March, sight unseen as a way of settling an enormous gambling debt he owed the Duke. They were married the day after the agreement was made, and the infuriated Earl of March departed on his Grand Tour immediately thereafter, not to return for four years. You can read the details on my blog, http://www.aheyerlove.com/blog/. Because I like ladies with ships on their heads (see my blog also), I placed the costumes a few decades later in the 18th century, but attitudes towards marriage and the Grand Tour changed relatively little in that time.

The Secret Bluestocking: Isobel’s Traditional Regency Romance (Historical Romance)

the secret bluestocking#Written as an homage to Georgette Heyer, this is the first novel written by Alicia Quigley. After years of being filed away, we’re happy to present it for your enjoyment. Please note, this is a Traditional Regency Romance; the “spice” (sex) level is very low, a G-rated movie, if you will.

What would you do if you were intelligent, independent, wealthy and had an interest in archaeology? If you’re the Honorable Miss Isobel Paley, you do as you please, but you would keep it as your most guarded secret.

Isobel’s story is set in a time of social change, after Mary Wollstonecraft published her famous “A Vindication on the Rights of Woman,” positing (correctly, of course!) that women were not inferior to men. Even so, Society hadn’t yet changed to the degree that a free-thinking woman of means could be open about her “unseemly” interests.

Isobel happily pursues her intellectual passions without a care for marriage. She’s perfectly capable of tending to her own life as a trendsetter in fashion during the Season and an archaeologist in Scotland during the summer. Marriage, she believes, is only the surrender of her legal identity, independence and fortune to the whims of a man.

Then an accident outside her country estate brings Major Lord Francis Wheaton into her life and her home. Lord Francis, recently back from the Peninsular Wars, must convalesce at Isobel’s manor, being too injured to travel.

What follows is the tale of two strong-willed individuals, both harboring secrets of their own, and their undeniable attraction to one another. Will Isobel succeed in keeping her secret? Will Lord Francis find what he needs? And just who is the mysterious Marcus Paley?

A Lady of Passion: Isobel’s After Dark Regency Romance (Historical Romance)

a lady of passionA Lady of Passion is my “After Dark” version of the The Secret Bluestocking. The stories are nearly identical, but A Lady of Passion is rewritten slightly to allow Isobel and Francis’ relationship to have a strong physical component.

The Yuletide Countess: Harriet’s Traditional Regency Romance (Historical Romance)

the yuletide countessHarriet Walcott, companion of Miss Isobel Paley (from The Secret Bluestocking), is the perfect example of a spinster: past the usual age of marriage and content to spend her days with her needlework and her painting, without a hope for love. Her fondness for her family, along with her ability to find joy in everything, endears her to most who know her.

On her annual sojourn with Isobel to Ballydendargan, Scotland, Harriet finds more than the peace and quiet of the countryside. She meets Miss Catherine Dalburn, governess to Lord Glencairn’s two children as well as the children themselves. The two women form a friendship and Harriet grows fond of the children.

While Isobel pursues her “secret bluestocking” interests and Lord Francis Wheaton arrives in Ballydendargan to continue his pursuit of Isobel’s heart, Harriet finally meets Lord Glencairn. A dashingly handsome man in his later years with twinkling blue eyes and beautiful white hair, he and Harriet become fast friends, united in their desire to see Isobel and Lord Francis finally admit their feelings for each other and marry.

Fate has a surprise in store for Harriet, who has long thought herself “on the shelf.” Are her feelings for Lord Glencairn more than friendship? Can he possibly feel the same for her, especially since he all but disappeared from polite society after his wife’s death ten years before?

The Yuletide Countess is a “co-quel” or “side-car” to The Secret Bluestocking/A Lady of Passion, in that the much of it happens in parallel with the other books. However, the point of view is strictly Harriet’s.
